Jared McCain, Londynn Jones help USA basketball teams win FIBA championships

Centennial High School basketball standouts Jared McCain and Londynn Jones recently helped USA basketball teams bring home gold medals at the FIBA U18 Championships.

McCain, a guard who recently completed his junior year at Centennial, averaged 11.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists across six games to help Team USA win the FIBA men’s championship in Tijuana, Mexico.

McCain’s best performance at the tournament came during a pool-play game against Ecuador. He scored 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting to help USA to a 123-41 victory. McCain, who is committed to Duke, also scored 17 points in a 92-64 victory over Mexico. He finished with five points and five rebounds in the 102-60 championship victory over Brazil.

Jones, a recent graduate of Centennial who is headed to UCLA, averaged 7.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.0 assists over six games to help Team USA win the FIBA women’s championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Jones tallied 15 points, five rebounds and five steals in the championship game, as USA heled on for an 82-77 victory over Canada. She also had 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals in an 84-40 semifinal victory over Brazil.

Hillcrest’s Dennis Evans has been selected for the Team USA men’s basketball team that will compete at the FIBA U17 World Cup in Malaga, Spain. The competition begin July 2 and concludes July 10.

Evans, a 7-foot-1 center who recently completed his junior year at Hillcrest, is the lone Californian on the roster. He averaged 11.6 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks per game for the Trojans during the winter. Evans is rising up the 2023 recruiting rankings and already has offers from seven colleges.
